Italy Launches Revival Plan for Southern Wheat and Olive Oil Production
Italy's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty is teaming up with agricultural organizations and regions to support the country's southern wheat and olive oil production. The goal is to enhance national production, particularly of durum wheat and olives, which are crucial components of the Mediterranean Diet.
Minister Francesco Lollobrigida announced a series of measures aimed at boosting domestic production and supporting farmers who are struggling with low prices. He emphasized that 'farmers must be incentivized' given that wheat is being sold at extremely low prices.
The revival plan includes controls to verify the quality of imported wheat, investments in research, and promotional initiatives for 100% Italian pasta. Coldiretti proposed creating a Southern Italy Pasta PDO to reward durum wheat cultivation in southern regions.
