Italy Seeks to Boost Domestic Oil and Gas Output Amid Fossil Fuel Dependence Concerns

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has unveiled measures to boost domestic oil and gas production, aiming to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports.

The country currently produces around 29 million barrels of crude oil per year, mainly in the southern region of Basilicata, and about 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

To speed up permitting, the government will appoint special commissioners in cases where local authorities fail to take decisions on applications within the required timeframe.

Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said that addressing this issue is crucial for Italy's energy security.
