Italy Speeds Up Oil and Gas Projects Amid Energy Security Concerns
Italy has announced plans to accelerate oil and gas projects by simplifying permitting procedures and reducing dependence on foreign supplies. The country currently produces around 29 million barrels of crude oil per year, mainly in Basilicata, but still relies heavily on imports.
The Italian government intends to prevent projects considered strategic for energy security from languishing due to administrative delays, with Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin stating that special commissioners can be appointed when local authorities fail to respond within established deadlines.
This move comes amid concerns about the stability of global energy supplies following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz shipping route and high energy prices. Italy's dependence on imported fuels, particularly natural gas, makes it vulnerable to market volatility.
