Italy Steps In to Help Ukraine with Agricultural Export Crisis
Ukraine and Italy have been discussing ways to support Ukrainian agricultural exports following Russian attacks on port infrastructure in Greater Odesa. The goal is to develop alternative export routes, restore logistics infrastructure, and create additional crop storage capacity.
The current situation has resulted in Ukraine exporting only about one-third of its potential agricultural export volume in August, which is estimated at around 60 million tons. However, using alternative routes could increase this figure to around 50%, according to Agriculture and Food Minister Taras Vysotskyi.
Ukraine has already secured $35 million in international assistance for temporary grain storage, including $25 million from the World Bank and around $10 million from other partners. Italy is considering providing support through FAO programs, which could include a voucher system to help farmers pay for necessary storage equipment and services.
