Italy Surpasses Europe in LNG Imports Amid Gas Price Surge
Italy has surpassed its European competitors in liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports for the first time since 2017, becoming the largest importer of LNG in Europe in July. This comes as traders take advantage of government incentives to purchase gas cargoes despite rapidly rising prices.
The war and supply disruptions in the Middle East have caused European gas prices to roughly double since the beginning of the year. As a result, Italy's energy sector is taking an expensive bet on filling its storage facilities with LNG, giving it an edge over neighboring countries like Germany and France.
According to Bloomberg, Italy's gas storage rules impose strict filling targets and penalties for non-compliance. The country has managed to fill 75% of its gas storage facilities so far, lower than the average of the last five years but higher than other major markets in Europe.
