Japan and Malaysia Ink LNG Emergency Supplies Pact
Japan and Malaysia have strengthened their cooperation on liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, agreeing to a framework that will ensure stable emergency supplies. This move comes amid rising tensions on global energy markets, including a recent surge in France's benchmark gas price.
The agreement was signed between the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and PETRONAS LNG LTD, a subsidiary of Malaysian group Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS). The framework builds on a 2025 memorandum of cooperation that explored strategic bilateral arrangements in the LNG sector.
The new agreement aims to help secure LNG supplies for Japan in emergency situations where electricity and gas stability could be at risk. It also seeks to strengthen energy security for both countries, according to JOGMEC.
