Japan Lands Emergency LNG Lifeline Deal with Petronas
Japan has secured its first emergency liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply deal with Malaysia's Petronas, according to the country's industry ministry. The agreement allows Petronas to deliver LNG to the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security, which will then supply private buyers such as utilities in case of an emergency.
The master sales and purchase agreement aims to provide a more agile framework for future LNG supply arrangements, enabling Japan to respond better to evolving energy needs. Tetsuya Azuma, director of the Japanese ministry's energy resources development division, stated that the country would seek similar agreements with other countries.
Petronas Executive Vice President and CEO of gas maritime business, Datuk Adif Zulkifli, emphasized the trust built between Petronas and JOGMEC over many years. The deal is expected to contribute to greater supply resilience.
