Japan Secures Emergency LNG Deal with Petronas Amid Global Supply Concerns
Japan has signed its first emergency liquefied natural gas (LNG) procurement agreement with Petronas, Malaysia's national oil and gas company. The deal will see Petronas deliver LNG to Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), which will then supply private buyers, including utilities, when they cannot secure LNG through other channels.
The master sales and purchase agreement was announced by Japan's industry ministry on Friday, following the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference in Tokyo. Tetsuya Azuma, a director of the Japanese ministry's energy resources development division, spoke at the press conference but did not provide specific details about the volume or contract duration.
Petronas Executive Vice President and CEO of gas & maritime business Datuk Adif Zulkifli said the agreement reflects the trust built with JOGMEC over many years. 'By establishing a more agile framework for future LNG supply arrangements, we are better positioned to respond to evolving energy needs and contribute to greater supply resilience,' he stated.
Japan also signed a memorandum of cooperation with Montenegro on energy projects, including developing an LNG receiving terminal and gas-fired power plant.
