Japan Secures Emergency LNG Lifeline with Petronas Amid Global Supply Concerns

Japan has secured its first emergency liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply deal with Malaysia's Petronas, a landmark agreement aimed at boosting energy resilience. The master sales and purchase agreement will enable Petronas to deliver LNG to the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), which will then supply private buyers such as utilities in times of shortage.

Tetsuya Azuma, director of the Japanese ministry's energy resources development division, said that the country would seek similar agreements with other countries. Petronas Executive Vice President Datuk Adif Zulkifli noted that the deal reflects the trust built up between JOGMEC and Petronas over many years.

Japan has also signed a memorandum of cooperation with Montenegro on energy projects, including developing an LNG receiving terminal and gas-fired power plant. This agreement builds on a previous understanding between JERA, Japan's largest power generation company, and the Montenegrin Government to explore the development of an LNG terminal and associated gas-fired plant.
