Japan Secures First Emergency LNG Deal with Petronas
Japan has secured its first emergency LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) deal with Malaysia's Petronas, a major step towards diversifying its energy imports. The master sales and purchase agreement was signed on Friday by Japan's industry ministry, which stated that the country plans to pursue similar agreements with additional countries.
The deal allows Petronas to deliver LNG directly to the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), which will then supply private buyers, including utilities, when they cannot secure LNG through other channels. The volume and contract duration of the agreement were not disclosed.
Petronas Executive Vice President and CEO of gas & maritime business, Datuk Adif Zulkifli, said that the agreement reflects the trust built with JOGMEC over many years. He added that by establishing a more agile framework for future LNG supply arrangements, Petronas is better positioned to respond to evolving energy needs and contribute to greater supply resilience.
