Japan Taps Latin America and Africa for Oil as Middle East Imports Decline
Japan's oil diversification drive is opening up new routes for Nippon Yusen KK, the country's shipping line. The company is in talks with Japanese refiners to help them import oil from Latin America and Africa as they try to reduce their reliance on Middle Eastern supplies.
Nippon Yusen CEO Takaya Soga said that discussions are at an early stage, but these regions could become increasingly important sources of crude for Japan. He noted that the war in the Middle East has disrupted oil supplies, making it necessary for refiners to diversify their imports.
The move is part of Japan's efforts to reduce its dependence on foreign oil and mitigate the risks associated with volatile global markets. By importing oil from new regions, Japan can reduce its exposure to supply disruptions and price volatility.
