Japan's Economy Slows Amid Middle East Conflict Uncertainties
Japan's economy decelerated sharply in Q2 of 2026, posting a revised annualized growth rate of just 0.3%. This slowdown comes after a strong start to the year, with GDP growing at an annualized rate of 1.8% in Q1.
The core issue lies in business investment, which flatlined at 0% year-on-year in Q1 and contracted by 0.7% during that period. This trend continued into Q2, with little sign of improvement.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has had a significant impact on Japan's economy, with crude prices elevated due to high demand from imports. The country imports approximately 90% of its crude oil from the region, and exports to the Middle East fell by 17.6% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year.
The Japanese government has implemented subsidies to mitigate the effects of rising energy costs on households and small businesses. However, this development does not change the fact that Japan's economy is facing significant challenges due to the Middle East conflict.
