Japan's 'K-Shaped Economy': High-End Spending Drives Growth Amid Widening Inequality
The Japanese economy has experienced its third consecutive quarter of GDP growth, with an annualized rate of 1.1% for the April-June 2026 quarter. This growth is attributed to high-end spending by affluent households and those benefiting from larger bonuses.
Despite concerns over cooling personal consumption due to naphtha shortages and surging crude oil prices triggered by escalating tensions surrounding Iran, resilient high-end spending effectively underpinned growth. However, experts point to a deepening divide in how households actually experience the economy, describing a growing bifurcation shaped like the letter 'K.'
Uichiro Nozaki, senior economist at Nomura Securities, describes this phenomenon as a 'K-shaped economy.' While noting that 'high-end consumption remains relatively firm,' he pointed out that 'a K-shaped economy, this has been occurring in Japan in recent years as well.'
