JERA, Japan's largest power generation company, is exploring the possibility of importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) to power Hawaiʻi. The company held its first community meeting in Honolulu on August 3, which drew around 75 attendees. According to Erik Montague, JERA Americas' vice president of development, 'We recognize that this is new territory for Hawaiʻi.'

JERA understands the challenges that Hawaiʻi faces with its energy trilemma of affordability, reliability, and sustainability. Montague stated, 'JERA has some learnings we'd like to bring to Hawaiʻi and hopefully help solve these issues and be part of the overall solution.'

The second open house event will take place on August 5 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. Representatives from JERA will be available from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Pīkake Ballroom.
