Joly Tight-Lipped on Using Energy Exports in Trade War with US

Canada's industry minister, Melanie Joly, is keeping mum on using Alberta's energy exports as leverage in the ongoing trade war with the United States. In a news conference in Calgary, reporters asked Joly if oil and gas shipments might be used to gain an upper hand in negotiations. She declined to comment, stating that the federal government doesn't negotiate in public.

Joly expressed confidence in Prime Minister Mark Carney's leadership in navigating the trade dispute, which has seen new tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump and counter-tariffs announced by Canada. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been vocal in her opposition to using energy exports as leverage, arguing that it would harm Canadians and deprive the country of revenue.

Joly maintained that Canada is in a strong position and aims to help businesses weather the economic storm. 'We have many cards in our hand and, of course, we have many hands to play,' she said.
