Jordanian Cement Plant Shifts to Gas, Cuts Emissions by 27-30%
The Qatrana Cement Plant in Jordan is shifting from heavy fuel oil to compressed natural gas (CNG), a move expected to reduce emissions and enhance energy efficiency in the industrial sector. The agreement between the National Advanced Natural Gas Company (Watani) and Qatrana Cement Company aims to supply the plant with natural gas starting in 2027.
Experts praise the decision as a positive step from an economic, security, and environmental perspective. Duraid Mahasneh, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the EDAMA Association for Energy, Water, and Environment, notes that relying on local resources reduces costs and enhances energy security, while also reducing carbon emissions compared to heavy fuel oil.
Omar Shoshan, Chairman of the Environmental Societies Union, considers this shift a strategic transitional step towards modernizing Jordanian industry and reducing its carbon footprint. He emphasizes the importance of integrating this move with the expansion of renewable energy in other sectors to achieve a low-carbon development model.
