Kalshi Targets Oil Market with Proposed WTI Perpetual Futures Contract
Kalshi, a US-based crypto derivatives exchange, is planning to seek regulatory approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for a perpetual futures contract linked to West Texas Intermediate crude oil.
The proposed contract would have no fixed expiration date and trade 24 hours a day, five days a week. This marks an expansion of Kalshi's use of perpetual futures beyond cryptocurrency, as the exchange already offers a Bitcoin perpetual contract.
The CFTC approved Kalshi's Bitcoin perpetual contract on May 29 under Commission Regulation 40.3, establishing that the regulator can treat contracts without expiration dates as futures products under the Commodity Exchange Act.
