Kansas Wheat Producers Face Drought and Dry Weather Challenges Ahead

Dr. Vic Martin, an agriculture instructor in Barton County, Kansas, is warning wheat producers about the challenges ahead for the 2027 crop. The latest drought monitor report shows a significant increase in drought conditions across southwest and south-central Kansas, with almost all of Barton County and surrounding areas now in moderate drought.

The six to ten-day forecast indicates a 60-70% chance of above-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation, while the eight to fourteen-day forecast suggests a continued 50-60% chance of above-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation. This could be detrimental for dryland soybeans and late-planted sorghum fields.

As planting for the 2027 wheat crop approaches, Martin emphasizes the importance of weed control, especially those harboring the wheat curl mite. He recommends using herbicides like Paraquat or tillage to eliminate weeds under current conditions. Additionally, soil testing is crucial, particularly if it's been a while since the last test.

Martin advises checking for possible carryover from double-checked soil-applied herbicide products and rates. Most wheat producers have likely already chosen varieties for the upcoming season, but those who haven't can refer to an excellent publication listing available varieties with details on each.
