Karachi Flour Prices Soar Amid Wheat Supply Concerns
Flour prices in Karachi have surged due to concerns over wheat availability and imports. The average price of a 10kg wheat bag has risen to Rs1,236, while fine flour is now selling at approximately Rs153 per kilogram. This increase comes despite a rise in domestic wheat production, which reached around 29.61 million tonnes during fiscal year 2025-26.
The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has been assigned the task of arranging imports of around 1 million tonnes of wheat to strengthen domestic supplies. However, market representatives believe the planned quantity may not be enough to meet the country's requirements and prevent further pressure on prices.
Onion prices have also increased in Karachi, with retail rates climbing to between Rs150 and Rs180 per kilogram, depending on size and quality. The sharp increase has added to inflationary pressure on household food budgets.
