Karamay's Rise from Oil Town to Tennis Hub

Karamay, a city in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, has transformed from an isolated oil town into a thriving hub for tennis enthusiasts.

The city's name, 'Karamay', originates from the Uygur language and means 'black oil', reflecting its oil-driven development. With a population of fewer than 500,000 people, Karamay is one of modern China's most important energy bases, home to the Xinjiang Oilfield, which has maintained annual crude oil production of over 10 million metric tons for 24 consecutive years.

The city's passion for tennis has grown significantly over the decades, turning it into an unlikely center for the sport in inland China.
