Kenney's Nationalization Call Sparks Outrage Amid Oil Export Tariff Fears

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has faced immense pressure from various politicians and critics to weaponize the province's oil exports as a political tool. However, in a recent video address, Smith outlined the disastrous consequences of imposing export tariffs on US-bound oil, including fuel shortages in Ontario and Quebec.

Smith explained that if Canada were to impose a 50% tariff on the four million barrels of oil it sends daily to the US, the US would retaliate with similar tariffs on Canadian imports. This would lead to Texas refineries shifting their supply chain to Venezuelan heavy oil, making Alberta's oil exports redundant.

The results would be catastrophic, with the Toronto Stock Exchange potentially collapsing and half a million jobs lost in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe echoed Smith's concerns, stating that an export tariff on Western Canadian oil would disproportionately affect Eastern Canada.

Critics like Ezra Levant have accused former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney of hypocrisy for advocating for the nationalization of Alberta's oil industry. Levant pointed out that Kenney's proposal is similar to Pierre Trudeau's National Energy Program, which was a de facto nationalization of the energy sector.
