Kenya's Wheat Flour Prices May Rise as Import Delays Bite

The Cereal Millers Association (CMA) is warning that wheat flour prices may rise in Kenya due to delays in approving import permits. The association's chief executive, Paloma Fernandes, said millers had committed to buying local wheat at Ksh5,100 per 90kg bag, up from Ksh4,750.

The global wheat price rose 5.8% in July, putting pressure on Kenya's flour market. The country relies heavily on imported wheat, with about 95% of its requirements sourced from international markets.

Fernandes urged the relevant authorities to release the pending import approvals, warning that continued delays would increase costs for millers and ultimately affect consumers.
