Kerala Snack Prices Set to Soar Amid Sugar and Egg Price Hike
Kerala's traditional snack and bakery industry is facing a crisis as prices of key ingredients like sugar, eggs, and cornflour have surged.
The price hike, which ranges from 10-20%, has forced small bakers to consider raising their prices by at least 10% on end products. This comes during the festive season when demand for snacks and sweets typically increases.
Khaled K, a baker in Kozhikode, said that sugar prices have shot up by 10-15%, while cornflour has seen a 10-20% hike. Egg prices have also added to the pressure, with eggs costing Rs 8 per piece on average.
Vijesh Viswanath, owner of a popular bakery chain in Kochi, said that small bakers have been severely impacted by the price rise. 'There has been a 40% rise in egg prices from last year, while sugar prices have gone up by almost Rs 12-13 per kg since last month,' he said.
