Keystone XL Pipeline Revival Sparks New Energy Infrastructure Interest

The Keystone XL oil pipeline project has been revived amidst renewed interest in energy infrastructure. Initially proposed by TC Energy, the pipeline would transport 830,000 barrels of crude oil daily from northern Alberta to refineries on the Gulf Coast via Cushing, Oklahoma.

The project was first rejected by President Obama but later revived by President Trump during his term. However, construction halted after President Biden revoked a key permit in 2021.

TC Energy incurred significant losses due to the pipeline's cancellation and shifted its focus to natural gas projects. Despite previous statements indicating they had moved on from Keystone XL, TC Energy proposed a new pipeline, Prairie Connector, which would carry 550,000 barrels per day from Alberta to Wyoming using some existing Keystone XL infrastructure.

The company plans to decide on the progress of Prairie Connector by 2027, contingent upon securing the necessary U.S. presidential permit.
