However, Iranian officials have dismissed this claim as 'laughable,' stating that conditions on the island are calm.
The island sits 16 miles off Iran's coast in the northern end of the Gulf and is a critical hub for Iran's oil exports. Prior to the US blockade, which began in mid-April, Kharg Island accounted for 90% of Iran's crude exports. However, flows from the island have been disrupted since the blockade was imposed.
A U.S. official stated that previous strikes on military targets at Kharg did not impact oil infrastructure. Hamid Bovard, CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company, said that workers were busy repairing damage and modernizing facilities, contradicting Trump's claims of an attack.
