Kharge Slams Centre Over Sugar Price Hike and Low Stocks
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has criticized the Centre over rising sugar prices and low stocks, questioning its 'Self-Reliant India' claim. In a post on X, Kharge posed three direct questions to the Modi government.
The first question is why the sugar stock in India, the world's largest sugar producer and exporter, has reached its lowest level in 9 years today, prompting the halting of exports and importing 1 million tons of sugar duty-free. The second question is who is responsible for the price hike burdening the public right before the festivals, as sugar prices have increased by nearly 40% in three months.
The third question is why the policy of diverting sugarcane and grain to produce Ethanol for E20 isn't being reviewed when there's a shortage of sugar in the country. Kharge added that the Centre's ethanol blending policy is illogical, as India is importing sugar from abroad while producing Ethanol with sugarcane.
