Kinew Supports Proposed Northern Shield Pipeline, Citing Economic Benefits

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has expressed his support for the proposed Northern Shield oil pipeline, which would carry 500,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta to Ontario. This pipeline would stay within Canada's borders and is seen as a key step in strengthening the country's economy and national unity.

Kinew's stance is particularly significant given that nearly 500 km of the pipeline would pass through his province. While he has set some conditions, including ensuring Indigenous governments are onside and workers are protected, his willingness to support the project marks a rare example of interprovincial co-operation in Canada.

The proposed pipeline is seen as crucial for Canada's energy sector, which has been hampered by the lack of pipelines. With 168 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and 2.1 trillion cubic metres of natural gas, Canada is well-positioned to meet domestic and export demands. However, the failure to build pipelines has cost the country dearly, as seen during Russia's invasion of Ukraine when Canada was unable to respond due to a lack of infrastructure.

Kinew's support for the pipeline is also notable given his party affiliation. The Manitoba NDP premier's stance has been met with some criticism from within his own party, but he argues that the project would be beneficial for northern Manitoba and Indigenous communities.
