Kinew Welcomes Northern Shield Pipeline Amid Canada's Economic Downturn

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has expressed support for the proposed Northern Shield oil pipeline, which would transport 500,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta to Ontario. The pipeline would be a significant economic development opportunity for Canada and Manitoba, and Kinew's support is crucial given that almost 500 km of the route would pass through his province.

Kinew has stated that he is willing to entertain the idea of the pipeline if it will make Canada stronger, but emphasizes that things must be done in the right way. He has also set out conditions for his support, including ensuring that Indigenous governments are onside and workers are taken care of.

This stance from Kinew is a welcome change from some other provincial leaders who have been opposed to pipelines. The Northern Shield pipeline would stay within Canada's borders, unlike Enbridge's Line 5 which passes through Michigan. Kinew's support has been praised by research fellow Lee Harding as a positive example of interprovincial co-operation and a boost for Canadian unity.
