Kingfisher Gas Project to Generate Shs114 Bn Annually, Says Museveni
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has announced that the Kingfisher Gas Power Project is expected to generate Shs114 billion ($30 million) annually. The project will use associated gas at the Kingfisher oilfield, which would have otherwise been flared.
The planned 80-megawatt generation plant will be powered by part of Kingfisher's gas, with the remainder being condensed and turned into liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking. The LPG production could help reduce Uganda's dependence on imported cooking gas and traditional biomass.
Uganda has discovered an estimated 500 billion cubic feet of natural gas alongside about 6.5 billion barrels of petroleum resources, with around 1.4 billion barrels considered recoverable. The Kingfisher project is operated by CNOOC Uganda and includes systems for gas processing, electricity generation, and LPG production.
