Knutsen OAS Shipping has taken delivery of a new LNG carrier, 'Ravenna Knutsen', which will start operating in the Mediterranean from the third quarter of 2021. The vessel was built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in Korea and measures 180 meters in length and 28.4 meters in width.

The 'Ravenna Knutsen' has a cargo capacity of 33,300 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas in three tanks and can maintain a speed of 15 knots powered by a 6,710 kW engine. It will be flagged in the Special Register of the Canary Islands and registered in the naval registry of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The growing demand for LNG as an alternative fuel has led to the development of smaller vessel sectors, particularly in island areas of Europe and Southeast Asia where large vessels have limited accessibility. According to Clarksons Research, small-sized LNG carriers (less than 40,000 cubic meters) currently account for 32.2% of the existing fleet, with carriers between 40,000 and 100,000 cubic meters accounting for an additional 23%.
