Korean Air Faces Fuel Price Squeeze Amid Oil Shocks and KFTC Mandate
Korean Air faces a double bind due to the Korea Fair Trade Commission's (KFTC) '90% seat supply' mandate, which makes it hard for the airline to defend profitability by trimming operations. The airline is on the cusp of completing its corporate combination with Asiana Airlines.
The international oil price has surged past $100 per barrel due to Middle East crude supply disruptions, causing a sharp escalation in fuel cost burdens for South Korean airlines. Jet fuel prices have tripled compared to last year's average, reaching $181.46 per barrel as of August 11th.
Korean Air consumed approximately 30.3 million barrels of jet fuel last year, which translates to a $9.03 billion annual purchase exposure. Every dollar increase in the per-barrel price expands this exposure by roughly $300 million.
