KP Wheat Reserves Plummet to Critical Levels Amid Supply Concerns

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's (KP) wheat reserves have fallen to 189,000 metric tonnes, sparking concerns over supply availability in the province.

The Food Department data reveals that KP requires around 14,900 metric tonnes of wheat every day, leaving only about two weeks' worth of stocks in government warehouses. This translates to roughly 13 days of consumption for the province's population of approximately 43.84 million people.

KP's annual wheat requirement stands at 5.436 million metric tonnes, but local production falls short at around 1.472 million tonnes. The resulting deficit is a significant 3.964 million tonnes each year.

To mitigate the shortage, officials claim that 225,000 metric tonnes of wheat from PASSCO (Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation) are on their way to replenish provincial reserves.
