Ksi Lisims Secures 20-Year Supply Deal with German Utility Uniper

Ksi Lisims LNG has signed a formal 20-year supply deal with German utility Uniper, solidifying its position as a major player in the global LNG market. The agreement will see Ksi Lisims export up to 12 million tonnes of LNG per year from its site on Pearse Island, near the Alaska border.

Uniper has significant power generating capacity and is one of Europe's largest importers of liquefied natural gas. In 2022, the German government took control of Uniper amid an energy crisis triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Ksi Lisims project, led by Houston-based Western LNG, is expected to be Canada's second-largest LNG facility, representing around 13% of the country's total natural gas exports by the early-to-mid 2030s. The estimated capital cost for the project has been revised to $30 billion.

Not everyone is supportive of the deal, however. Richard Brooks, climate finance director at Stand.earth, criticized it as 'a major step backwards for climate action', citing recent devastating wildfires in Canada and Europe as evidence of the need for more sustainable energy solutions.
