Kuwait Petroleum Corporation Expands Oil Production Ambitions with Pipeline Sale
The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) is planning to expand its exploration and development of new oil reservoirs, aiming to increase production capacity to 4 million barrels per day by 2035. To achieve this goal, KPC will meet its financing needs through a sale and leaseback arrangement involving the sale of a 49% stake in Kuwait's oil pipeline network to three major global asset management firms.
The deal, valued at around $16 billion, will allow KPC to raise $7.85 billion for its expansion program. The lenders' 49% ownership interest in the existing and operational pipeline network effectively serves as collateral securing the financing, with full ownership reverting to KPC after 20.5 years.
KPC has chosen this approach amid severe liquidity constraints caused by the force majeure resulting from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The project represents a long-term financing arrangement rather than a conventional investment, and its success will depend on whether the proceeds are used to increase Kuwait's oil production capacity.
