Labor Day Gas Prices Expected to Hit Record High Amid Global Tensions
Rising tensions in the Middle East are driving up global oil prices and pushing Labor Day gas prices to record highs. According to GasBuddy, the average price for regular gasoline is expected to reach $4.03 per gallon, surpassing the previous record of $3.83 per gallon set in 2012.
The war in Iran and blockage of the Strait of Hormuz have squeezed global oil shipments, contributing to high crude costs. Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries have also knocked millions of barrels of processing capacity offline, further tightening supplies of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel worldwide.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, notes that 'it's been a challenging year for motorists' due to constant ups and downs in gas prices. While relief may be on the horizon if tensions ease, prices are unlikely to moderate significantly until after September 15 when winter blend gasoline is introduced.
Historically, Labor Day gas prices have averaged $3.79 per gallon (2022), $3.77 per gallon (2023), and $3.29 per gallon (2024). With diesel prices also expected to reach record highs, motorists can expect to pay more at the pump this holiday weekend.
