Lacombe Town Hall Heats Up Over AI Data Center Concerns
Alberta's Minister of Municipal Affairs, Doug Glubish, faced heated opposition from residents in Lacombe during a town hall meeting. The residents expressed concerns about the environmental impacts and potential risks associated with building AI data centers in their area.
Glubish explained that data centers are large facilities that process digital transactions and store information, often using powerful computers that require significant amounts of electricity. He compared them to oil refineries, saying they are 'digital refineries' that create a new market for Alberta's natural gas.
However, residents raised several concerns, including environmental impacts like water consumption and pollution, job security, and an overall lack of trust in the government's ability to regulate these facilities. One resident claimed that China built many data centers but now half of them are decommissioned, questioning what protections taxpayers have if these projects are abandoned.
Glubish acknowledged the concerns and assured residents that Alberta's government plans to build data centers responsibly and ensure only strong technology while protecting their way of life. He also mentioned legislation in place to protect Canadians' data.
