Latin America's Oil Producers Thrive Amid Global Energy Disruption
Latin America's top oil producers are capitalizing on soaring oil prices amidst the ongoing disruption in the global energy market. The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial trade route for crude oil shipments, has been largely closed since the US and Israel began hostilities with Iran in February.
Daily crude oil traffic through the Strait dwindled from 20 million barrels per day (bpd) before the war to fewer than 4 million bpd in early August. Meanwhile, export revenues for Latin American energy producers have surged due to the price hike.
However, analysts caution that the net macroeconomic effect of the disruption varies among regional producers and remains unclear. The region's top six oil producers - Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Mexico, and Venezuela - have been boosting output and exports in recent times.
