Lawmakers Aim to Tax Oil Giants' Record Profits Amid Global Energy Crisis
Major oil companies Exxon and Chevron are raking in massive profits due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US, which has driven up energy prices. Exxon reported a doubling of its second-quarter profits to $14.53 billion, while Chevron nearly quadrupled its profits to $12.07 billion.
Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Rep. Ro Khanna have proposed taxing major oil producers for their windfall profits from 2026 onward, with the revenue redistributed to consumers. The UK and other European countries have already extended temporary windfall profits taxes on fossil fuel companies until 2030.
Critics argue that the energy company windfalls are unjustified, especially when compared to the struggles faced by millions of people around the world who are dealing with rolling blackouts, electricity curbs, rationing, and food shortages.
