Lithuanian Corridor Promised to Ukraine Fizzles Out Amid Infrastructure Challenges

The Lithuanian corridor promised to Ukrainian grain exports has quietly died down. In April 2022, world prices for grain and fertilizers rose sharply, and in May, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced a real threat of a food crisis. Lithuania's Minister of Economy Aushrine Armonaite proposed an initiative to export 1 million tons by rail with subsequent transshipment through the Klaipeda State Seaport in Ukraine.

The project was personally headed by President Gitanas Nauseda, who called on officials to 'strain their brains' and find reserves to punish Russia for blocking wheat supplies. However, three years have passed, but it has not become easier in the Black Sea region.

Four of the thirteen grain terminals in the ports of the Odessa region have suspended operations, and the cost of freight insurance to Ukrainian ports has increased two to three times. The Minister of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky confirmed that the entry of commercial vessels into the ports of Greater Odessa has been completely stopped since July 22.

The main buyers of Ukrainian grain are the countries of the European Union (about 50%), the Middle East and North Africa (20%), Turkey (about 13%). Ukraine planned to export about 43 million tons of grain in 2026, but now the seaports administration estimates daily losses at about $80 million - that's $2.4 billion per month.
