Lloyd's Register Supports Perenco Gabon's Conversion of LNG Carrier into Floating Storage Unit
Lloyd's Register is supporting Perenco Gabon in its conversion of an LNG carrier into a floating storage unit (FSU) for its offshore project in Gabon. The FSU, formerly known as LNG Bayelsa and now temporarily named FSU LNG Cap Lopez, is being converted at Drydocks World Dubai. This conversion will provide LNG storage for the project while helping reduce routine gas flaring and improving energy efficiency.
The work on FSU LNG Cap Lopez includes extensive steel works, new piping systems, installation of a boil-off gas module, and broader life-extension measures. LR's involvement spans the full scope of conversion and life-extension activities, providing classification, plan approval, survey, and technical oversight to ensure that all modifications meet stringent safety and regulatory requirements.
According to Sean Van der Post, Global Offshore Business Director at Lloyd’s Register, this project reflects increasing momentum behind LNG carrier conversions and floating storage solutions as operators seek flexible, lower-impact ways to develop gas resources. He emphasized the importance of independent technical assurance and robust life-extension strategies in adapting assets to new operating profiles and environments.
