LNG Carriers Attacked in Damietta Port Amid Worsening Regional Tensions

Two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers were attacked in Egypt's Port of Damietta, sparking concerns about the widening of the war in the region. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at 14:20 GMT when both vessels were hit simultaneously.

The ships affected were the Bermuda-flagged LNG carrier Gaslog Salem and the Marshall Islands-flagged FSRU Energos Winter. Both impacts caused fires, but local services were able to extinguish them quickly, with no casualties reported on either ship.

The location of the attack was fortunate, as Egyptian harbor responders were able to respond rapidly and prevent a potential disaster. The incident has raised questions about which group may have been responsible for the attack, with three possible candidates: Hezbollah, Iraqi Iranian-controlled PMF forces, or the Houthis.
