LNG Carriers Get Hybrid Boost as Everllence and Hudong Zhonghua Pursue Efficiency Gains
Everllence and Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group have partnered to develop a new class of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, with a capacity of 180,000 cubic meters. The vessels will be equipped with a Dual Fuel, Electric+ propulsion system.
The project aims to improve efficiency in LNG carrier design by integrating the vessel's power generation and propulsion systems. This is a departure from conventional designs where these components are treated as separate packages.
According to Song Wei, Chief Technical Engineer at Hudong Zhonghua, shipowners face significant challenges in achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The hybrid electric propulsion solution is intended to improve efficiency and provide owners with more choices when specifying new vessels.
