LNG Facility Sparks Concerns Over Migratory Bird Habitats
A $13 billion liquefied natural gas export facility in coastal Louisiana has sparked controversy over its potential impact on migratory birds. The project, led by Energy company Caturus, includes three proposed park-and-ride lots that could be built along Highway 82 in Johnson Bayou.
The Peveto Woods Bird and Butterfly Sanctuary, a crucial stop for up to 2 million birds migrating between South America and Canada, is located just within walking distance of the planned facilities. Opponents argue that light and noise pollution from the parking lots could disorient the birds, threatening their habitats.
A group of concerned birders, ecological researchers, and environmental activists have submitted comments opposing the plan to the Louisiana Department of Conservation and Energy. The permit applications are currently on hold, pending further information and possible alternative sites for the parking lots.
