LNG Industry Faces New Challenge as Demand Risk Rises Amid Strait of Hormuz Crisis

The Strait of Hormuz crisis has left the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry facing a new challenge, one that extends beyond the contested waterway. The crisis has exposed a growing issue for LNG: rising demand risk.

For decades, the industry rested on two assumptions: supply could reliably reach global markets and demand would keep growing strongly enough to absorb it. However, with the Strait of Hormuz crisis, these assumptions are now in doubt.

The International Energy Agency estimates that new production from North America and Africa replaced about three-quarters of the lost Gulf deliveries between March and June. This is an impressive demonstration of the system's growth in capacity and flexibility. Yet, a quarter of global supply still depends on 21 miles of contested water.

Repetitive threats to LNG shipping carry economic consequences: shipping costs rise, insurance premiums climb, and buyers pay more for their gas. Prices now move several percent in a day on a single headline, eroding confidence before any molecule fails to arrive.

The crisis is quietly reshaping demand. Governments concerned about energy security accelerate investment in renewables, electrification, storage, and domestic resources. Industrial consumers seek control over energy costs, while utilities look to reduce exposure to imported fuels.
