LNG-Powered Train Set to Launch in India, Saving Thousands in Fuel Costs
India's first LNG-diesel DEMU train is set to begin operations from Sabarmati Railway Station. The eight-coach train features two modified power cars that can switch between diesel and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) without losing power.
The Railways expect the initiative to save around Rs 24 lakh annually in fuel costs, including Rs 11.9 lakh per power car. LNG use is also expected to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
The train has completed over 2,000 km of field trials and can travel up to 222 km on a single fill of its 2,200-litre LNG tank.
