LNG Shortages Loom Over Europe as Gas Stocks Plummet Ahead of Winter
Europe's gas stocks are dwindling to record lows ahead of winter, sparking concerns about supply difficulties and high prices. The current stock levels, at just 58%, are the lowest since 2021, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe.
The surge in prices is attributed to Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has halted gas shipments from Qatar, a key European supplier. This has led to higher prices for contracts for future delivery, making it difficult for European buyers to fill their storage tanks.
An EU Commission spokesperson expressed confidence that filling storage tanks to 80% capacity is sufficient to secure winter supply and is technically achievable. However, analysts are not so sanguine, warning of elevated supply risks due to reduced LNG availability from the Middle East.
Rystad Energy analyst Antonia Syn noted that supply risks remain elevated amid reduced LNG availability from the Middle East. Gas infrastructure often experiences breakdowns or technical disruptions, and severe cold in the US could divert its supplies to domestic buyers.
