LNG-to-Power Project Eyed to Ease Iloilo City Brownouts
Iloilo City is facing rotational brownouts due to tight power supply in the Visayas grid, but Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu has identified a potential solution. An LNG-to-power project is being eyed in Iloilo City as a new source of electricity. The city government is expecting the entry of LNGPH, an integrated liquefied natural gas terminal and power facility, which currently operates in Batangas. This project aims to address the power shortage not only for Iloilo City but also for the entire Visayas region.
The Department of Energy had previously identified Iloilo as a potential location for LNG terminal and gas-to-power development due to the need to study natural gas markets and identify anchor demand for such projects. The project is being considered because the power shortage has become a concern, with areas across the Visayas experiencing recurring rotational brownouts since August.
The city mayor acknowledged that there is no immediate solution to the power supply problem but assured that the government is actively working with stakeholders in the power sector to address the situation. Treñas-Chu emphasized that the LNG-to-power project is being considered because of its potential to ease the power shortage in the Visayas region.
