Logistics Strain Widens Price Gap in Ukraine's Corn Market
Corn producers in eastern Ukraine are facing significant logistics challenges due to their distance from the country's western borders. The high cost of rail transportation is limiting marketing options and affecting purchase prices, according to analysts at PUSK.
The regional price gap has reached UAH 700-1,000/t, with elevator prices in central Ukraine around UAH 6.5 thsd/t, while in the east they are mostly at UAH 5.5-5.8 thsd/t. Port prices for large corn lots are approximately $170-180/t.
The high transportation costs to the western border may make the Danube an alternative route for producers in eastern Ukraine or lead them to sell corn to domestic processors, reducing attractive price levels available to farmers.
