Loonie Dips as Oil Prices Fall Amid Demand Concerns
The Canadian dollar dipped slightly on Thursday following the release of economic data in the United States. The loonie finished at US$0.7175 or US$1=C$1.3938, a small decrease from Wednesday's rate.
Crude oil prices also retreated due to demand concerns and inventory data from the American Petroleum Institute and Energy Information Administration. West Texas Intermediate dropped US$2.11 per barrel at US$81.16, while Brent crude oil declined US$2.03/barrel at US$86.95.
The stock markets continued their upward trend, with the TSX/S&P Composite Index reaching a new high of 36,763.81 points before settling at 36,759.29. The S&P 500 also set a record at 7,816.70 points, closing at 7,798.99.
