Loonie Surges as Gold Rally Boosts Canadian Dollar
The Canadian dollar is experiencing a resurgence in value as it becomes one of the top-performing G10 currencies. USD/CAD has dropped by 56 pips to 1.4005, bringing significant levels into play.
The big figure is now within reach, with recent lows at 1.3990 and 1.3982 also coming into focus. From a technical standpoint, the 38.2% retracement level from the May-June rally is at 1.3982, which could be broken if the trend continues.
On the fundamental side, Canada's strong Q2 GDP numbers have led to a snapback in market sentiment. The bigger picture, however, remains more important as global growth and AI capex sustainability become increasingly optimistic. A gold rally is also acting as a tailwind for the Canadian dollar, with significant trade balances based on gold exports in recent years.
The crude oil side has been a drag this week due to optimism surrounding the potential reopening of Hormuz, which has weighed heavily on oil prices. Despite this, the loonie has managed to hold its ground. Looking ahead, clarity on a US-Canada trade deal will be crucial in attracting real investment into Canada.
